what is the meaning of this life?

it feels virtual, it feels a dream,

but what are those things without the meaning i have given them?

i must give life to meaning, and meaning to life.

and the half-moon sits in the sky

like a bowl, waiting to be filled

with such light.

but where can i begin to find the answers to the questions that lay on my mind?

except the very place they were birthed- inside- and

i am reminded then, of the worth

of never letting those questions die.

for they are the very things that fuel this life, this journey…

so how many times must i learn that the destination is not important?

here, now,

the half-moon twitches in the sky,

like a child’s sleepy eye, filled with knowing

and yet, slowly closing,

waiting for morning.

will i let this night slip away like nothing?

or staple it like a scar on my mind?

i must give life to meaning, and meaning to this life…

Sitting around in your underwear all day and watching films is research.

DOG DAY AFTERNOON

From the start, this film looks to play out as a simple bank robbery movie, with Al Pacino yelling a lot but being awesome. Thats exactly what it is. What makes it different is how real it feels. In which case it shouldn’t surprise you that it is based on a true story. This is not an action movie first, it is a movie about peoples relationships with each other and how we still go through with things even when we know they will fuck everything up.

This is movie that has the ability to capture the attention of a modern audience without fast cuts, explosions and attractive looking women. It is a movie that resembles more a play, with the focus on the dialogue and interactions of the characters, with long drawn out scenes without cuts that don’t feel like long drawn out scenes without cuts. There is no music in the movie, not even a timpani drum.

With such transparency you can see the components of what makes a great film great. It makes us feel something by showing not telling. Not that there is anything wrong with the fan fare of fast cuts and a great score but those elements should add to a film and not make up for something missing.

GARDEN STATE
STOP! BEFORE YOU READ ON-WATCH THIS CLIP! REALLY WATCH IT AND TAKE IT IN”

Garden State is to me one of those awesome parks you remember as a kid and then you go back to visit it as an adult and you see how shitty it really was.

This movie assumes the audience is blind and for some reason tells you what’s going on in a very loud and slow voice.

Lets slow down here. Lets look at how this film came to be. Zach Braff had been doing the scrubs thing for a few years, directed a few episodes, then decides he wants to film, direct, and star in a movie based on a screenplay he wrote a few years back. If I were his friend and he had told me what was going on I would have said, “I heard that before anybody makes any rash decisions they should masturbate, maybe you should masturbate on this one for awhile.”

He didn’t masturbate on it like I told him too, he made the film. He then comes to me a second time asking what to do with his shit movie. I tell him
“What the shit did I tell you?”
“Isn’t there anything we can do?”
“There’s only one thing to do….ill give you a list of some great songs, you use the rest of the budget of the film to pay the royalties. Most are indie bands, so buying the rights wont be too expensive. Just throw em all over the place. Turn the movie into a really long music video”

With only a 2 million dollar budget and filmed in a month, the film grossed 32 million and has a 86% on rotten tomatoes.

I must thank this film for showing me some great bands that I would not have heard of otherwise, and ultimately it does have a great message even though its written in crayon.

Natalie Portman, bless her heart.

This is the first piece of writing I’ve put together in a long time, so I’d like some brutally honest constructive criticism from you guys. Here it is:

Fog began to roll in as I crossed an empty street intersecting Amador Valley. It was the middle of July and the sky was completely overcast. What a fucking beautiful day. I’d been attending a class on heart rhythm analysis all morning, and they’d just let us out for lunch. Good thing too; I was starving. I’d heard that a Sprouts had opened up nearby, so I decided to check it out. But first I needed a cigarette.

My mind was racing from all the information I’d been taking in, all the stimulation in the classroom, and I needed to calm down. I reached into the front pocket of my backpack and pulled a new pack of Camel Non-Filters I’d purchased the day before. Strange… I’d been smoking for over three years, and I’d never heard of a pack of manufactured non-filtered cigarettes. But I’d always enjoyed rollies, so I figured, why the fuck not? I’ll give ‘em a go… I opened the pack, lit the first cigarette and took a drag.

Tasted like shit.

I was already almost at Sprouts. By the time I put my cigarette out in the ashtray by the entrance, there was still well over half left. Oh well. A few grams of cancer I wouldn’t have to worry about.

The inside of the store had an earthy, familiar atmosphere – somewhere between Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. I was immediately drawn to the rather large bulk section in the very center. They had all the usual ingredients: whole grains, beans, lentils, nuts, dried fruit… the works. I started reading the some of the Nutritional Facts on the containers, paying specific attention to the protein content.

Now I’ve always been against calorie-counting, and quantitatively based dieting; I feel like it just misses the point. But just to put things in perspective for you: I am a 21-year-old male, 5’10”, probably less than 130 pounds. Recently I’ve taken to eating a mostly vegetarian diet, but the frequency of my food intake is somewhat irregular, so for the first time in my life I am losing what precious little weight I have left… I need some goddamn protein.

So there I was, walking up and down the aisles of this health food store, studying the labels on each product, hoping to find some kind of magical beefcake grain with enough protein to last me a week. 9 grams, 5 grams, 7 grams… This shit wasn’t going to cut it.

I was just starting to lose interest when I looked up and noticed an employee stocking shelves nearby. He looked at me and we met eyes briefly, and then he returned to his work. But he seemed to be watching me in his peripheral vision. Whatever, I thought to myself, I want a sandwich. I walked from the aisle over to the deli, and happened to pass by the employee. He stopped what he was doing and turned to face me.

“Good afternoon! Can I help you find something?” He offered, with a giant smile from ear to ear, too exaggerated to be genuine. I turned to face him.

“No thanks. Just looking,” I replied and nodded politely. For a split second his eyes shot to the backpack I was carrying, almost as if… No, I was just being paranoid.

“Well… all right,” his jolly grin faded into a frown. “Let me know if you need anything.”

“Thanks…” I read his nametag. “…Rob.” I turned and continued toward the deli, but could still feel his eyes on my back as I kept walking. Weirdo…

The deli had a great selection. $3.99 for a veggie sandwich, and that included avocado and cheese! Good heavens, I was about to feast… An attractive young lady – probably a little older than me – leaned over the counter, showing off a rather prominent cleavage. I’m sure it was intentional.

“What can I get for ya, hun?” She smiled. I didn’t even pay attention to her humongous bajongas. My mouth was watering and my eyes were glued to the menu.

“I’ll take a veggie on whole wheat.” She made my sandwich – no pickles – and rang me up at the register.

“$4.32,” she said cheerfully, biting her lip gently, not taking her eyes off mine. Jesus, this girl was a succubus. I snickered and reached into my back pocket for –

“Ah, horseshit!” I cursed out loud. I’d forgotten my wallet at home today. The girl jumped a bit, apparently startled by my sudden profanity, and then chuckled and regained her composure. I explained to her that I forgot my money and turned to leave without waiting for a reply. I didn’t have time to be embarrassed. I was too hungry for that.

As I walked toward the exit, I noticed out of the corner of my eye the same employee from before start to follow me. Christ… Here we go.

“Sir,” he called out and picked up his pace a bit. I didn’t answer, but kept walking. “Sir!” This time a little louder. I braced myself, and his determined walk turned into a jog, then to a full-on sprint toward the door. He made it before I did, and blocked my way completely, like Gandalf the fucking Grey taking on a Balrog.

“Is there a problem?” I asked, not unkindly, but with a hint of agitation in my tone.

“Sir, I’m going to have to ask you to open your bag for me.” I looked around. People had begun to notice what was going on and stopped dead in their tracks to see the show. So I figured I’d give them one. I looked the employee straight in the eye. There was so sign of his original ultra-smile. Now he looked flat-out pissed off.

“I really don’t think that’s necessary.” I kept my eyes locked on his, and smiled a bit as if to say, you wanna play? OK, bag boy. Let’s play.

“Well, you’re supposed to leave your bags at the front—”

“No one told me that,” I cut in, “I was never asked to check my bags at all. Look man, rest assured, I didn’t steal anything from your store.”

He rolled his eyes. “Yeah, but you didn’t buy anything either.”

I shook my head in disbelief. “So do you invade the privacy of everyone who comes in and doesn’t give you their money?” I muttered under my breath.

“Excuse me?”

“Look Rob,” I said, ignoring him. By now, almost everyone in the immediate area had dropped what they were doing, and were watching with their undivided attention. “I’m gonna be honest with you. This is my first time at a Sprouts, and I like your store, but frankly you’re doing a real good job of ruining my first experience here.” He gave an impatient sigh. “So the way I see it, we can do this one of two ways: You can walk away, and we’ll pretend this never happened; you go back to your job, I’ll go back to my school, and everyone goes home happy… Or you can search my bag, find absolutely nothing, and I’ll have a word with your manager and make your life hell here.”

He sneered, “I am the manager, kid.”

“Wonderful. In that case, I’d like the number to your corporate offices. What’ll it be, Rob?”

His grandiose expression deflated for a second, and then that original smile returned. That fake fucking smile. “Have a nice day, sir. Thanks for shopping with us.” The nearby patrons all gasped in unison, as if this were some horrible sitcom.

Rob stepped aside, and I exited the store with a smug little half-smile on my face. I decided a victory cigarette was in order and walked over to the ashtray where I’d put out that cigarette from before. It was still there. I grabbed it, re-sparked it and took a drag.

Tasted like shit.
